N Acetylcysteine supplement questions: Q. Can aceytylcysteine supplement be taken the same day as MultiVit Rx or alpha lipoic acid antioxidant? A. If you plan to do so, we suggest using only half a capsule of acetylcystiene, and using this nutrient only 3 or 4 times a week.
Q. Why do you suggest not taking N acetyl cysteine supplements every day? A. There is a rare possibility that taking N acetylcysteine every day may inhibit the body's own production of glutathione, or can form a red blood cell-derived molecule that makes blood vessels think they are not getting enough oxygen. These studies were done in rodents and high dosages of N acetyl-cysteine were used. We don't have much research in humans to determine the health benefits and risks of daily N acetylcysteine use. For these reasons, we think people can get the benefits of N acetyl cysteine by using this supplement every other day or 3 times a week and minimize or eliminate the potential side effects.
Q. What is the right n-acetyl cysteine dosage as a daily supplement? A. There are no accepted guidelines on the appropriate n-acetyl cysteine daily dosage. Some people may need none, others may benefit from taking 500 mg of n-acetyl cysteine two or three days a week. If you are taking other antioxidants, we suggest you reduce your dosage of n-acetyl cysteine.
Q. What is the difference between cysteine and N Acetyl cysteine ? Which one is better to take? A. Most often, n aceytylcysteine is the one taken since it has stronger antioxidant potential, however it depends on the condition being treated. N-Acetyl cysteine has an additional acetyl group which makes it more potent as an antioxidant.
Q. There are so many antioxidant supplements to choose from, including acetylcysteine, alpha lipoic acid, acetylcarnitine, mangosteen, acai, goji berry, pomegranate, resveratrol, lycopene, etc. Which one is the best? A. This is impossible to say and it is impossible to predict which one of these in which dosage would be the best choice for a person to take. One option is to buy acetylcysteine and a few other supplements and then alternate their use. One day take acetylcysteine, another day take pomegranate extract, another day resveratrol, you get the point.
Q. I plan to take acetylcysteine supplement for a long time. What is the ideal dosage? A. Since each person has a unique biochemistry, it is impossible to say what the ideal acetylcysteine dosage would be. One option is to take one acetylcysteine capsule twice a week if you plan to take it for many years. Another option is to open a capsule and take a third daily with a day or two off each week.
